Their file formats do not make them assets.

A file is a carrier. Asset status depends on whether a party has sufficient rights and control, can reuse the content to produce future benefit, and can prove the origin and scope of those rights.

A practical test is:

digital content asset
= identifiable object
× rights clarity
× control
× reusability
× value pathway
× evidence quality

This is an operational framework rather than an accounting formula. A serious weakness in any factor reduces the reliability of the whole asset claim.

File, work, rights, and asset are different layers

Consider an image:

image file
 ↓ a reproducible data object
visual work
 ↓ expressive content
copyright and licence
 ↓ authority to reproduce, modify, distribute, and exploit
digital content asset
 ↓ controlled reuse for future value
accounting asset
 ↓ additional recognition and measurement requirements

These layers cannot be collapsed.

The same file may embody copyright held by a creator, a limited licence obtained by a customer, user content hosted by a platform, and personality or privacy interests of the person shown. Possessing a copy does not settle the other relations.

Text

A text project can contain several distinct objects:

a Markdown, document, or database file;

an expressive work such as an article or script;

facts and data described by the text;

editorial structure, versions, and links;

a published page and its accumulated discoverability;

rights to reproduce, revise, distribute, and commercialize the work.

Original articles, tutorials, product documentation, scripts, and prompt libraries may become assets when origin, authorship, rights, version, and permitted use are clear.

Public facts do not become exclusive property merely because they are copied into a document. An abstract idea is not identical with its developed expression. An unauthorized article is an exposure rather than a reliable asset. Content published on a platform remains subject to the applicable service agreement.

Long-term text assets also need retrieval, maintenance, composition, and evidence of actual use. A document that cannot be found or updated has limited operational control.

Images

An image asset may involve:

the rendered file and editable source;

copyright in the visual work;

a licence and its field of use;

likeness and privacy interests of people depicted;

trademarks and brand elements;

provenance of photography, generation, or purchase;

restrictions by channel, territory, duration, and purpose.

An unidentified image in an asset library is not automatically safe for commercial reuse. A governed visual system with source files, authorship records, licences, model releases, brand rules, and approved exports has much greater control and reuse value.

Even self-produced photography can include third-party interests in people, locations, artworks, trademarks, or confidential material.

Recordings

One audio file may combine:

the recording file;

the written or musical work being performed;

performer rights;

rights of the sound-recording producer;

personality interests in an identifiable natural voice;

music, samples, and sound effects;

contractual limits on commercial use and distribution.

Owning an MP3 copy is different from holding authority to use it in advertising, distribute it, train a model on it, or generate new speech from it.

Why a cloned or synthetic voice is a special case

The phrase voice asset can conceal several different objects:

a person's natural voice
recorded voice samples
a particular performance
a voice model and configuration
generated audio
a voice-use licence

They have different legal and operational foundations.

Chinese Civil Code Article 1023 provides that protection of a natural person’s voice follows the relevant rules for protection of likeness.Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China

It is therefore misleading to say that a company simply owns another person’s voice. More precise claims are that a party holds a licence for specified voice uses, controls a model and its technical files, and owns or is authorized to exploit particular recordings and generated outputs.

A governed voice package may become a restricted operational asset when it includes proven provenance, informed consent, defined uses, model control, reusable production capability, and evidence of every relevant permission.

The asset is usually the combination of licence, samples, model, production capability, outputs, and records. It is not ownership of the person’s identity.

A fully synthetic voice that is not associated with a particular person changes the risk profile but does not eliminate questions about training data, model licences, service terms, output rights, and confusing similarity.

Video is usually an asset bundle

A video may combine:

concept and script;

raw footage;

likenesses and performances;

photography, animation, and graphic design;

narration, voice models, music, and sound effects;

fonts, logos, trademarks, and product images;

editing projects, subtitles, and effects;

the final master;

platform pages, distribution records, and derivatives.

A final MP4 without source media, project files, or rights records has limited reusability. A complete project without music, font, performer, or likeness permission is not a freely reusable asset either.

Video asset management must retain the rights chain, production chain, and version chain behind the master file.

Six conditions of a content asset

Identifiability

Separate raw material, source project, master, derivative, model, dataset, licence, and published output. Labels such as final and new version are not durable identifiers.

Clear rights

Record who created the material, who holds which rights, and whether commercial use, modification, distribution, model training, synthesis, and sublicensing are permitted. Record expiry and termination conditions.

Control

Control includes credentials, editable sources, backup and recovery, independence from a single platform, authority over approved uses, and the ability to stop unauthorized internal deployment.

Reusability

One-off content realizes most of its value in a single delivery. A long-lived asset can be reused lawfully across relevant articles, videos, products, and channels. Reuse never extends beyond the licence.

A value pathway

Content may produce direct sales, licensing income, search traffic, customer acquisition, brand recognition, training value, product experience, or lower production cost. The pathway should be observed rather than assumed.

Evidence

Retain provenance, creator, date, agreement, consent record, service terms, generation settings, file version, revision history, publication record, and permitted uses. Evidence supports both enforcement and future decisions about continued use.

Five stages from file to asset

This is an operational maturity model, not an accounting standard:

Stage

Condition

Raw material

File exists, but source, rights, and intended use remain unverified

Usable resource

Lawful for the current task, with limited reuse

Governed content

Identified, versioned, sourced, licensed, and stored

Content asset

Reusable for continuing value with an adequate rights chain

Transferable or recognizable asset

Can be licensed, sold, valued, or considered under applicable accounting rules

Many asset libraries complete storage and stop. Assetization also requires rights governance, version control, use evidence, and validation of value.

What changes with generative AI?

Generative AI lowers production cost but does not supply the missing asset conditions.

For generated text, images, voices, and video, record:

the model or service used;

the service terms in force at creation;

whether the input material could lawfully be provided;

whether people, brands, or protected works were used as references;

the human choices, edits, and combinations involved;

possible similarity to existing works or identifiable people;

permissions for commercial use, retraining, and sublicensing;

whether the result can be reproduced and edited.

“AI-generated” identifies a production method. It does not by itself prove ownership, copyright protection, exclusivity, or accounting value.

A minimum multimodal asset record

Each governed item should record at least:

asset ID
name and media type
source files and master version
creator and creation date
provenance and generation method
rights holder
licence scope and duration
likeness, voice, and performer consent
permitted and prohibited uses
models, fonts, music, and third-party material
storage and backup
derivatives and publication history
observed use and value evidence
risks, expiry, and review owner

The purpose is not to turn creativity into paperwork. It is to make future retrieval, judgment, reuse, and retirement possible.

Conclusion

Text, images, recordings, voices, and video can become digital content assets, but media format does not create asset status.

The file is a carrier. The work is the expression. Rights determine permitted action. Control determines who can deploy it. A value pathway explains why it is worth retaining. Evidence makes the claim defensible.

For a voice, the most accurate asset object is not a person’s identity. It is a restricted package of authorized use rights, samples, models, production capability, outputs, and records.

Digital content asset management should identify the materials that can actually be controlled, reused, and shown to create value rather than relabel every stored file as an asset.
